With this new Legendary Ward Singers CD, Songs In A Higher Key, produced and arranged by Ray Barnes and Grammy Award winning songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Tony Coleman, they honor that innovative and creative spirit of Clara Ward by bringing very imaginative new arrangements to some of the Famous Ward Singers’ greatest hits. One of the things that made the Ward Singers famous was Clara’s decision to take the lead switching style used by male gospel quartets to new heights, leaving room for spontaneous improvisation and vamping by each member of the group while giving virtuoso singers an opportunity to be featured and we continue that style also in this production. And, understanding that Clara was responsible for bringing gospel music into secular circles, with many of the songs on the new CD, they use creative rewrites and arrangements of past and present secular music hits to the world of gospel—bringing the Ward Singers full circle.
By taking this fresh approach to the music, Madeline Thompson and the Legendary Ward Singers hope to use their music ministry to unite and bring together the young and old alike to some of the wonderful messages found in the Bible and to the teachings of Jesus Christ. The new CD also includes a string of impressive new selections.
